To say
Tyler Morley had a monster day at the plate Saturday in the baseball team's doubleheader against Greensboro would be an understatement. He went 5-for-6 with two home runs, two doubles, a walk, sacrifice bunt, was hit by a pitch, scored five runs in knocked in eight runs as the Fighting Squirrels won the opener 14-7 and lost the nightcap 23-8.
The first-game win for MBU snapped a 27-game USA South Conference losing streak, dating back to an April 16, 2022 doubleheader sweep against Southern Virginia. The DH split also lifted MBU's record to 4-8 overall, matching the team's total number of wins for the 2023 season.
The Fighting Squirrels scored in six of their eight at bats in the first game, including a pair of round trippers by Morley. His two-run shot in the fourth inning lifted MBU's lead to 3-0, and his three-run shot in the seventh broke a 7-7 tie and proved to be the game-winning hit.
Michael Robertson was also 3-for-3 with a homer, two walks, two runs scored and three RBI to support a strong starting pitching performance by
Tucker Hensley. The veteran righty allowed just three earned runs in 6.1 innings before giving way to
Cody Hoffer, who got the win.
Matthew Charles did not get a save but pitched his way out of a ninth-inning jam unscathed to preserve the win.
The roles were reversed in the second game, with Greensboro hitting homers in the first two innings to build a 5-0 lead. The Pride then scored seven runs in the fourth inning and 10 more in the seventh inning to open an insurmountable lead. Morley was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, and
Noah Kessler added a three-run double in MBU's five-hit attack.
The Fighting Squirrels and Pride will finish their three-game series Sunday at Shifflett Field in Grottoes, Va., starting at 1 p.m.
