The Mary Baldwin softball team fell just short in both ends of Sunday's non-conference twinbill at Bridgewater, dropping the opener 6-5 in eight innings after rallying from a 5-0 deficit, then losing the nightcap 5-3 after giving up three unearned runs in the first inning.
In Game 1, Bridgewater broke loose for five runs in the fourth inning before MBU battled back with five runs in the top of the sixth.Â
Molly Thompson's two-run single highlighted the Fighting Squirrels rally. MBU was unable to get the lead run home from third in the eighth inning while Bridgewater converted its opportunity in the bottom of the frame.
Leanne Rankin had two of MBU's eight hits, a walk, a run scored and an RBI to lead the MBU attack in the opener.
In Game 2, Bridgewater took advantage of a hit batsman and two errors to start the first inning to post three runs, then added a fourth score in the second inning. MBU's offense ignited in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four hits and cutting the deficit to one run.Â
Allison Crum's two run single to center plated two runs, and
Hadley May followed with an RBI single, but the visitors were unable to get the tying run home. Bridgewater answered in the bottom of the fifth with an insurance run to seal the win. May finished with two of MBU's eight hits.
The Fighting Squirrels (4-10) play just their second home doubleheader of the season Wednesday (3/20) against Sweet Briar (2 p.m.), then open USA South conference play Saturday with a trip to Methodist (DH at 1 p.m.).
