Hampden-Sydney scored two runs on a bases-loaded infield error with one out in the bottom of the ninth to emerge with a 7-6 non-conference baseball victory over Mary Baldwin Thursday.
The Fighting Squirrels outhit the hosts 9-5 and led from the top of the fifth until the final play of the game, fell to 4-11 for the season entering the weekend USA South three-game series at William Peace, which will be played Sunday (3/24, 4 p.m.) and Monday (3/25, DH starts at noon).
Noah Kessler,
Tucker Hensley and
JT Stevenson all ripped a pair of singles. Hensley also knocked in a run and scored twice to lead the MBU attack.
After trading leads in the early innings, MBU emerged from the top of the fifth with three runs for a 6-4 advantage. Hensley and
Landon Lightner had RBI base hits to give MBU the lead. The Fighting Squirrels went hitless in the last four innings of the game.
The Fighting Squirrels pitching staff then dodged several H-S opportunities in the late innings. The bottom of the ninth inning started with two walks and a sacrifice bunt that put the game-tying and game-winning runs in scoring positions. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, H-S plated the two needed runs on an infield miscue.
