Softball Team Gets The Brooms Out For The First Time This Year In Sweep At Brevard

Mary Baldwin's Softball team used an eight-run third inning in the second game of a doubleheader at Brevard Friday to complete the USA South showdown against the Tornados, winning the opener 6-2 before pulling off the sweep with a 9-1 victory in five innings.

In the opener, the visitors broke a 1-1 tie with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and added three insurance runs in the seventh to secure the win.  Trinity Thomas had two doubles and a single in three at bats, knocked in one run and scored three.  Olivia Gagne, Leanna Rankin and Regan Frazier also had RBI hits in the opener to support winning pitcher Emily McCreary (4-2), who allowed one earned run on nine hits.

In the nightcap, MBU again broke a 1-1 tie, this time with eight runs in the third inning.  Molly Thompson's grand slam capped the rally and supported Frazier's five-strong innings in the circle, allowing one earned run on three hits.  Hadley May also had two hits, a run scored and an RBI in the second game.

The fourth-place Fighting Squirrels own an 8-9 overall record, 3-1 in the USA South, and return to action Saturday with a visit to undefeated Pfeiffer (22-0), which is in first place in the USA South and ranked #18 in NCAA Division III.
