Pfeiffer softball, ranked 18th in NCAA Division III, combined 21 hits, five walks and five Mary Baldwin errors in two games to gain a doubleheader sweep against the visiting Fighting Squirrels, 5-1 and 4-2. Pfeiffer (24-0, 4-0 USA South) remains undefeated and No. 1 in the USA South standings while the Fighting Squirrels (8-11, 3-3 USA South) are tied for fifth in the 10-team conference.
In the opener, MBU jumped on top in the first inning when
Molly Thompson raced home on
McKenzie Tillman's double. Thompson (hit, walk) and
Leanna Rankin (two hits) led the visitors in the first game. Pfeiffer erased the deficit with a two-run hit by Kenzi Lyall in the second inning, then padded the lead with Lyall's solo homer in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth.
In the second game, Pfeiffer took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning, then saw MBU cut the score in half on
Allison Crum's infield grounder. The Falcons immediately answered with two more runs in the home fourth before MBU finished the scoring with
Hadley May's solo homer in the seventh.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action, weather permitting, with a non-conference DH at Mary Washington Tuesday (4/2, 3 p.m.), a home non-conference twinbill Wednesday (4/3, 1 p.m.) vs. Randolph College and then back to USA South Conference play Saturday (4/6) at home against William Peace (1 p.m.).
