William Peace players connected on two well-timed home runs in each game Saturday at Mary Baldwin to pick up a pair of USA South Athletic Conference softball victories over the Fighting Squirrels, 8-5 and 3-2. WPU improves to 14-12 overall, 4-2 in the USA South, while MBU is now 8-13 overall, 3-5 in conference play.
In the opener, MBU's
Allison Crum stroked a pair of RBI hits and
Hadley May supported with a sacrifice fly RBI followed by a blast way over the fence in left field as the Fighting Squirrels went back and forth with the Pacers. Reanna Braswell's three-run homer, followed by Adanya Day's first round tripper of the day, highlighed WPU's attack. The Pacers followed with two-run hits in the fifth and the seventh innings to pull out the 8-5 victory.
McKenzie Tillman had three of MBU's 11 hits in the first game while
Molly Thompson matched Crum's two safeties.
In Game 2,
Leanna Rankin and Thompson each had RBI singles in the second inning for an early MBU lead. The visitors evened the scores with solo homers by Day and Reagan Stewart, then Lydia Hunt's RBI hit in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winner.
Four MBU players each had two of the team's nine hits - Rankin, Thompson, Tillman and
Trinity Thomas.
The Fighting Squirrels return to the field Sunday (4/7) with a non-conference twinbill at Wilson College, beginning at 1 p.m.
