Box Score 2 Mary Baldwin scored two winning runs in the seventh inning of the first game, and Wilson battled back with two winning runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game as the Fighting Squirrels and Phoenix split a non-conference softball doubleheader Sunday. MBU won the opener 6-4 while Wilson captured the second game 9-7.
In the opener, MBU built up a 4-0 lead on RBI hits by
Kendal Switala and
Olivia Gagne in the second inning, followed by RBI hits by
Trinity Thomas and
Caroline Whitfield in the fifth. In the home sixth, Wilson tied the game with four runs on five hits and an MBU error. In the top of the seventh, the Fighting Squirrels plated two baserunners on an infield error by the Phoenix.
Gagne and
Hadley May each had three of MBU's 16 hits in the first game while Thomas and Switala each had two hits. Thomas also had two runs scored and an RBI.
In the nightcap, Wilson broke loose early for a 6-0 lead before MBU answered with six runs in the top of the top of the fourth. After the teams traded runs, Wilson broke the 7-7 tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Molly Thompson knocked in three runs to lead MBU's six-run fourth.
Leanna Rankin,
McKenzie Tillman and Gagne each had two hits.
Weather pending, the Fighting Squirrels (9-14, 3-5 USA South) have a home doubleheader Wednesday (4/10) against USA South rival Greensboro, starting at 2 p.m.
