The Mary Baldwin baseball team seems to be trying to make a habit of falling behind in the middle innings and rallying at the end. Thursday's try against Ferrum saw MBU try to overcome an 8-run deficit but fall short in an 11-8 final against the Panthers in a non-conference game at Shifflett Field in Grottoes, Va.
Noah Kessler had two hits and four RBI while
Michael Muller led the team with three hits to lead the hosts. MBU had the game-tying run in the on-deck circle in the eighth inning and at the plate in the ninth, but in both cases, the Fighting Squirrels were unable to capitalize.
Ferrum scored three runs in the first, three in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 10-2 lead on 10 hits and a handful of MBU misplays. Noah Basham's solo homer in the sixth inning highlighted the Panthers 13-hit attack.
Kessler plated one run on an infield ground out in the seventh and followed with a two-run base hit in the eighth to lead MBU's rally.
Tyler Smith,
Blake French and J.T. Stevenson also knocked in late-inning runs for the Fighting Squirrels (3-6).
MBU is back in action Wednesday (3/13) with another non-conference game at Bridgewater (3 p.m.), followed by the team's first USA South three-game weekend of the season Saturday (3/16, 3 p.m.) and Sunday (3/17, DH at noon) against Greensboro at Shifflett Field.
