Junior outfielder Alison Crum smacked bases-loaded single up the middle with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 to plate the game-winning run and give host Mary Baldwin its second 4-3 softball victory of the day over USA South rival Greensboro.
The two 4-3 wins over the third-place Pride pushed MBU up to fifth place in the USA South standings. The Fighting Squirrels will take an 11-14 overall record (5-5 in USA South) into Saturday's (4/13) conference showdown at North Carolina Wesleyan, with the DH starting at 1 p.m.
In Game 1, Greensboro scored three times in the first two innings. MBU started the rally with a run scoring on an error in the third inning, then tied the game with RBI hits by
McKenzie Tillman and
Hadley May in the fourth. The hosts then took the lead in the sixth on
Olivia Gagne's run-scoring hit. Tillman had two RBI and
Kendal Switala scored twice in the opener.
Starter Emily McCreary and reliever Regan Frazier combined to scatter eight hits and two walks and shutting down the GC offense over the last five innings. Frazier picked up the win.
Game 2 was the reverse of the first game. MBU scored three times in the second inning on one hit, three walks, an error and several wild pitches. Two runs scored on
Leanna Rankin's infield grounder and
Molly Thompson followed with an RBI base hit.
Greensboro got one run back in the fourth and eventually tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, setting up Crum's game-winning hit. MBU managed just three hits but took advantage of eight walks and an error to gain the win. Â
Frazier picked up her second pitching win of the day, improving to 4-3 for the season. Â
