Senior Day Delight: MBU Sweeps Softball Doubleheader Against Meredith

A pair of nail-biting victories were featured on Mary Baldwin's softball senior day Saturday as the Fighting Squirrels held on for a 3-1 win in the first game, then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning of the second game for a 3-2 victory.

The hosts scored single runs in the first three innings of the opener, then rode the strong pitching performances of Emily McCreary and Regan Frazier for the win.  Molly Thompson scored on a bases-loaded error in the first, followed by an RBI hit by Leanna Rankin in the second inning and Frazier's sacrifice fly RBI in the third for the 3-0 lead.  McCreary (5-4) allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks.  Frazier cleaned up the last inning to gain her second save.

In the nightcap, MBU scored twice in the first inning on an Allison Crum RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Trinity Thomas.  Meredith bounced back to even the score with two runs in the fourth on three hits.  MBU starting pitcher McKenzie Tilliman battled into the sixth inning, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks, before Frazier (6-3) came on in scoreless relief over 2.2 innings to get the win.

The deciding eighth inning saw Meredith put runners on first and third with none out.  Thomas then turned a double play on a line drive, followed by an infield ground out, to put MBU on offense with the score still tied.  Crum started the inning as the extra-inning ghost runner on second and moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by Frazier.  On the first pitch to Thomas, the ball bounced in the dirt to the backstop, allowing Crum to score the game-winning run.

The fifth-place Fighting Squirrels (14-15, 8-6 USA South) play a doubleheader at ninth-place Salem College Wednesday (2:30 p.m.) before closing out the regular-season Saturday (4/27) at home against fourth-place Southern Virginia (1 p.m.).
