Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Team Wins Twice At Salem To Move Into A Three-Way Tie For Third Place In USA South

Mary Baldwin had already clinched its second-straight USA South Conference playoff berth over the weekend with two wins over Meredith.  After Wednesday's two 7-0 victories at Salem, the question is now where the Fighting Squirrels finish in the standings and where they'll play on the first weekend of the playoffs (May 2-4).

The possibilities are seemingly endless for the 10-6 Fighting Squirrels, who enter Saturday's regular-season ending twinbill at home against Southern Virginia (1 p.m. start).  MBU, riding a four-game win streak, could seemingly finish anywhere from second to eighth place in the final standings.  The conference leadership will figure it out after the completion of all five of Saturday's doubleheaders and announce the playoff seedings and pairings.

Getting back to Wednesday's two shutout victories, MBU won the opener with two runs in the first, two runs in the second and the last three in the sixth.  Molly Thompson doubled home MBU's first run, scored the second on a wild pitch in the first inning while Kendal Switala blasted a two-run homer in the second.  Two runs then scored in the sixth on Leanna Rankin's single to center and error, and Thompson finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly.  Switala was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the first game.

Emily McCreary went the distance in the opener, allowing three hits and three walks while fanning eight to improve her pitching record to 6-4.

In Game 2, MBU scored in each of the first four innings to put the game away.  Allison Crum had a first-inning RBI base hit and Thompson doubled the lead with a sacrifice fly in the second.  Emily Hall and Regan Frazier each had RBI singles in the third and the fourth inning featured a two-run homer by Hadley May, who was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the second game.  Crum and Olivia Gagne also chipped in a pair of hits.

McKenzie Tillman threw all seven innings of Game 2, scattering five hits and one walk while fanning three to get the win.
