In a game delayed one day due to weather considerations, Mary Baldwin's baseball team showed the late-inning life they had early in the season Monday at North Carolina Wesleyan, but the rally fell short in a 12-6 setback vs. the Battling Bishops.
The hosts scored twice in each of the first two innings, then broke the game open in a five-run fourth inning. Freshman
Landon Lightner ignited MBU's offense with an RBI single in the top of the fifth.Â
After NCW added three more to increase the lead to 12-1, the Fighting Squirrels put together a five-run eighth inning that featured RBI walks by
Will Earnesty and
Noah Kessler, a bases-loaded balk,
Josh Lallo's RBI infield ground out and a run-scoring single by J.T. Stevenson.
Michael Robertson led the seven-hit attack with three safeties and a walk and a run scored.
The Fighting Squirrels travel to Chambersburg, Pa., Wednesday to play a doubleheader at Wilson College, then close out their first season at Shifflett Field in Grottoes, Va., over the weekend against Brevard. Senior Day activities will be held prior to Sunday's noon game against the Tornadoes.
