MBU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At Wilson Wednesday

Mary Baldwin used a key offensive surge early in both games Wednesday to sweep a non-conference doubleheader at Wilson by scores of 7-3 and 7-5.

It's marks the second time in MBU's four varsity seasons that the baseball team won both ends of the twin bill - the last was April 16, 2022 against USA South Conference foe Southern Virginia.  The wins also snapped a 12-game losing streak and lifted the team's record to 7-26 overall - equaling the most wins in a season for the four-year old program (7-33 in 2022).

In the opener, the Fighting Squirrels exploded for five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by two-run singles by Lucas Chinault and Dalton Hall.  Wilson answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and one in the second, but the visitors put the game away with a run scoring in the third on a Hall ground out and Will Earnesty's RBI single in the fifth.  Chinault and Carter Attard each had two hits in the opener.  Chinault and Hall each produced three runs in the win.

Cody Hoffer got the win and improved to 2-3 for the season after entering the game in the fourth inning to support starter Roman Boarders.  Hoffer, Gavin Rush and Matthew Charles combined for four innings of shutout relief to give the Fighting Squirrels the win.

In the nightcap, Wilson scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings before a four-run third for the Fighting Squirrels evened the game.  Michael Robertson smacked an RBI single and Tucker Hensley had a two-run base hit to highlight the MBU fourth.  The visitors took the lead in the fifth on Chinault's RBI base hit and scored another on an Earnesty ground out.  Robertson added another insurance run in the seventh when he scored on Noah Kessler's sacrifice fly.

Rush pitched 2.1 innings of relief in the second game to get his first pitching win of the year.  Alex Belako picked up his first save by getting the final three outs of game, escaping a jam where Wilson had the tying run on second base to end the game.

The Fighting Squirrels finish the season with three USA South games this weekend against Brevard.  The teams will play twice Saturday, starting at 1:30 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at noon.  Before Sunday's game, MBU will recognize its seniors in the annual event.
