Mary Baldwin continued to build a stronger attack as Sunday's game at Wilson College progressed, but the Fighting Squirrels ended up on the short end of a 1-0 final score in non-conference women's soccer action.

Hailey Shaffer cut across the goal box from left to right past several defenders in the 22nd minute, then put her shot just inside the left post for the only goal of the match. 

The hosts outshot MBU in the opening 45 minutes, 6-5, but the visitors pressured the Phoenix in the second half with an 11-5 shooting advantage, including one attempt that Wilson keeper Erin Roszkowiak jumped to deflect it off the crossbar that would have tied the game in the second half.  Alma Gonzalez-Hayes registered four shots, including three on goal, for MBU.

Fighting Squirrels keeper Maddy Vinson was credited with six saves while Roszkowiak made eight stops for Wilson.

MBU will try again for its first win of the season Wednesday (9/3) with a non-conference match at Regent University (6:30 p.m.).
