Mary Baldwin’s Caleb Smith Named To NCAA Division III SAAC

Mary Baldwin junior Caleb Smith, a member of the men's soccer and men's track & field teams, was confirmed Thursday as a new representative of the USA South Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Smith, who has served on MBU's SAAC for three years and is currently the president of the organization, is believed to be the first Fighting Squirrel to be selected to serve on the NCAA Division III SAAC.  His two-year term begins Jan. 18, 2026, and can be extended to three years if his schedule after graduation permits.

He is an environmental science major with a 3.568 cumulative grade point average.  He is a two-time member of the USA South Athletic Conference All-Academic Team after recording a 3.30 grade point average or better in each of his first four semesters at MBU.

Smith is a reserve midfielder on the soccer team, appearing in 34 out of 47 matches during the past three seasons.  He is also a distance runner for the track & field team, where he finished 12th in the 5,000-meter run and 9th in the 10,000-meter run at the 2025 USA South outdoor championship meet.

The MBU SAAC is active on campus and in the organization.  The group participates in two conference competitions each year – the Cans Across The Conference in the fall semester, where food is collected by each school and donated to a local organization (MBU donates to the Blue Ridge Food Bank), and the Pennies For A Purpose in the spring, where money is collected at various contests and donated to a local organization (MBU donated to the Valley Mission in Staunton in 2025).

Other SAAC activities include leading the MBU varsity athletes in the annual Trunk or Treat Halloween celebration in the PAC parking lot in late October, Staunton Holiday parade in early December and organizing the MBU athletic department's annual year-end awards picnic in May.
