The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team earned its first win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Eastern Mennonite 79–66 on the road.
The first half was tightly contested, with the Fighting Squirrels and the Royals heading into halftime tied at 35. Mary Baldwin shot 43 percent in the opening half and connected on four 3-pointers to outshoot EMU from beyond the arc.
In the second half, Mary Baldwin's defense made the difference, forcing 22 turnovers and converting them into 14 points. Sophomore D.J. Via was a defensive spark, recording four steals. The Fighting Squirrels' pressure defense forced the Royals into tough shots, holding them to 28 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range.
CJ Goode and
Rony Hogarth made key offensive contributions, each scoring 12 points.
Logan Barbour led the Fighting Squirrels in 3-pointers made, sinking three on his way to 11 points.
Mary Baldwin will make its home season debut Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. against Washington and Lee.
