The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team dropped its opening game of the Charlie Cobb Classic on Saturday, falling 70–41 to No. 17 Hampden-Sydney, according to D3hoops.com.
Hampden-Sydney controlled the game from the start, jumping out to a 34–17 halftime lead.
Freshman
Marquise Dunklin provided a bright spot for the Fighting Squirrels, scoring seven first-half points and going perfect from the free-throw line. Hampden-Sydney's starters combined for 19 of their 34 points before the break.
Mary Baldwin showed resilience in the second half. The Fighting Squirrels' defense tightened, forcing nine turnovers. Sophomore
DJ Via recorded his third game this season with two or more steals, while Dunklin added five additional points to finish with a team-high 12.
Ultimately, the Tigers' 38 paint points made the difference.
