For the first time since Mary Baldwin University transitioned to a co-educational institution in 2017-18, the Fighting Squirrels varsity athletic teams all boast a cumulative grade point average (GPA) above 3.00 and more than 75% of the student-athletes posted a 3.00 or better GPA in the Fall 2025 semester.
There were 191 student-athletes representing MBU's 13 varsity sports, including a dozen multi-sport athletes. Of those, 144 student-athletes registered a 3.00 or better GPA this semester (75.4%), including 17 student-athletes with a perfect 4.00 GPA while another 34 had at least a 3.80 GPA.
Leading the way was the MBU baseball team, which finished with 34 of 42 players with a 3.00 or better GPA, including 18 with a 3.80 or better GPA. The women's soccer team (20), the softball team (19), the men's soccer team (15) and men's basketball (12) also had strong semesters with more than half of their student-athletes with GPAs above 3.00.
Individually, six student-athletes have been at MBU for at least three semesters and have perfect 4.00 GPAs every semester, including sophomores Nicole Black and Anneka Burick from the women's cross country and track & field teams along with seniors Eveleen Diep and Lauren Lasher and sophomore Amelia Cross from the women's soccer team. Additionally, junior Alma Gonzalez Hayes is a member of the women's soccer and women's track & field teams and manager of the women's basketball team.
Other varsity athletes recording a 4.00 GPA in the Fall 2025 semester include Jacob Barber (baseball), Isaac Caraher (baseball), Hayley DeShazo (volleyball), Will Earnesty (baseball), Rayne Goins-Thomas (women's track & field), Joelle Hare (women's soccer), Elizabeth Laurelli (softball), Skylar Meriwether (softball), Yufei Qu (women's cross country/track & field) and Trevor Schwartz (men's soccer).
Team cumulative GPAs soared to new heights as every team climbed above 3.00 mark, including men's soccer and women's volleyball. The team rankings through the Fall 2025 semester are:
