The Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels women's basketball team fell 91-25 to Hollins University on the road in its return to action.
Freshman guard
Lanie Bethel led Mary Baldwin in scoring with nine points, knocking down two shots from beyond the arc.
The Fighting Squirrels struggled to find an offensive rhythm, managing just 13 points in the first half. Hollins applied steady defensive pressure, forcing 21 first-half turnovers and converting them into 20 points.
Zaria Holden paced Hollins early and often, scoring nine points in the first half before carrying that momentum into the second. She finished with a game-high 19 points.
Hollins pushed the tempo offensively, piling up 40 fast-break points. The hosts also controlled the glass, outrebounding Mary Baldwin 51-39. Hollins grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and turned those extra chances into 20 second-chance points.
Junior
Malia Bullock added seven points for the Fighting Squirrels, while freshmen
Nevaeh Clark and
Carma Bryant each pulled down seven rebounds.
Mary Baldwin will look to turn the page as conference play begins Tuesday, Jan. 6, at home against Brevard College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
