Jaden Ignacio and
Aimane Elbouazzaoui scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, to lead Mary Baldwin to a 98-54 non-conference men's basketball victory Tuesday over visiting Virginia University-Lynchburg.
Ignacio entered the game needing seven points to become the second player this season to reach the 1,000-point plateau for his career. Now with 1,012 career points, Ignacio trails only classmate Quintin Hart (1,127 pts.) on the career scoring list. Â
Hart and
Kevin Weaver, Jr., joined the scoring parade for the Fighting Squirrels against Virginia-Lynchburg. Hart had 14 points while Weaver had a career-high 10 scores. Weaver also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds while
Raymond Benton collected a game-high 13 caroms, helping the hosts claim a 53-28 advantage on the glass.
Virginia-Lynchburg (0-17), led by Saveon Jackson's game-high 20 points, scored the first four markers of the game before a
DJ Via three started the hosts on a 22-3 run.  Elbouazzaoui knocked down three long-range shots during that surge, and the Fighting Squirrels cruised to a 52-24 halftime lead on the way to the 44-point win. Ignacio finished 5-for-6 from three-point range while Elbouazzaoui and Hart each connected on four long-range shots.
The Fighting Squirrels (11-9) return to USA South Conference play with six games to close out the regular season, starting Saturday at William Peace (2 p.m.). MBU's final two regular-season home games are Feb. 12 (Greensboro, 6 p.m.) and Feb. 15 (Methodist, 2 p.m.).
