The first batter of the game for Methodist scored in both games of Saturday's USA South softball doubleheader at Mary Baldwin to give the Monarchs the lead they never relinquished on the way to a sweep over the Fighting Squirrels.
MBU fell in the first game, 8-6, despite two rallies. The Fighting Squirrels erased a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the visitors answered with five runs in the sixth to pull away for the win.Â
Kendal Switala ripped three hits and scored a run while
Leanna Rankin added a hit, two walks and a run scored for MBU.Â
Hadley May smacked her ninth home run of the season, 34th of her career.
In the nightcap, a 6-0 Methodist victory,
McKenzie Tillman contributed two of MBU's four hits. The Monarchs sandwiched one-run innings in the first and seventh around two-run innings in the third and fifth to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Mary Baldwin (12-8, 0-2 USA South), returns to action Monday (3/24) with a doubleheader at Sweet Briar (2 p.m.), followed by USA South twinbills at Greensboro Wednesday (3/26, 2 p.m.) and William Peace Saturday (3/29, noon).
