Mary Baldwin's softball team took two very different roads Monday to earn a non-conference doubleheader sweep at Sweet Briar. In the first game, MBU jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead and cruised to a 10-2 victory. In the second game, the Fighting Squirrels had to rally twice, including scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning, to secure a 6-4 victory.
The end result is the Fighting Squirrels improved to 14-8 overall heading into Wednesday's USA South twinbill at Greensboro (2 p.m.).
In Game One, the first four MBU batters all scored on one swing of the bat when
Hadley May cranked her 10th homer of the season over the centerfield fence for an early 4-0 lead. After the first-inning explosion, MBU continued to pull away for the eight-run win in six innings. May finished the game with three hits, two runs scored and six RBI. Jenna Dimicelli also contributed with three hits and three runs scored while
Trinity Thomas had two hits and two RBI.
In Game Two, Mary Baldwin had to erase a 1-0 deficit in the first inning, then had to rally again in the seventh after the Vixens scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. MBU scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings for a 3-1 lead, then needed an RBI double by
Hannah Bolt and a two-run game-winning hit by
Leanna Rankin to secure the win. Rankin finished with three hits and two runs in the nightcap while May and
Emily Hall each contributed two of MBU's 10 hits.
Emily McCreary went the first five innings in the first game to pick up her fifth win of the season while
Reagan Frazier, who pitched in relief of both games, got the final five outs in Game Two to improve to 6-1 for the season.
