A five-run ninth-inning helped clinch the first game, and a 10-run second inning in the second game put MBU in a hole it could not climb out of as the Fighting Squirrels lost both ends of a USA South Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday to North Carolina Wesleyan. Mary Baldwin was officially eliminated from playoff contention after losing all three games this weekend to the Battling Bishops.
Prior to the game, MBU honored the 10 members of its senior class and families. Between games, the Fighting Squirrels recognized members of its 2019-20 club-team campaign, which was cut short to just 11 games when the University moved to remote status due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
NCWU took an 8-5 lead into the last inning of the first game, then added five insurance runs on the way to a 13-7 victory.
Tyler Morley and Connor Michael each had three of MBU's 14 hits in the game and each scored twice.
Will Earnesty and
Michael Muller also chipped in a pair of safeties for the hosts.
In the nightcap, MBU took a 3-1 first-inning lead, highlighted by a
Jacob Barber two-run triple. Barber finished the game with two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. The Battling Bishops bounced back with a 10-run second inning, combining seven hits, four walks and three MBU errors to break the game open. N.C. Wesleyan then scored at least three runs in each of the final four innings to run away for the win. Earnesty also chipped in two hits and three runs scored while
Tyler Morley had four RBI in the second game.
Mary Baldwin (6-29, 4-14 USA South) closes out the 2024-25 campaign with five road games this week, starting with non-conference clashes at Washington & Lee Wednesday (6 p.m.) and Eastern Mennonite Thursday (4 p.m.) before traveling to Brevard for the final three-game conference weekend of the season Saturday and Sunday.
