Isiah Brooks,
Kelly Hackley Jr. and
Wesley Strychowski all contributed twice to Mary Baldwin's nine-hit attack, but the Fighting Squirrels were unable to get the key hit with runners in scoring positions in the last two innings and the late rally fell short in a 4-3 non-conference baseball loss at Washington & Lee Wednesday.
W&L scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings off four different MBU pitchers, but the Fighting Squirrels evened the game in the fourth and fifth innings and climbed to within one with a run in the eighth before falling short. The visitors left runners on second and third in the eighth inning and the bases loaded in the last frame.Â
Michael Muller, Strychowski and
Jacob Barber all knocked in runs for the visitors.
Seven MBU pitchers combined to hold the hosts to four runs on nine hits and six walks.
The Fighting Squirrels play their final non-conference game of the season Thursday at Eastern Mennonite (4 p.m.), then travel to Brevard, N.C. for a three-game USA South Athletic Conference series against the Tornadoes Saturday and Sunday.
