Hadley May's first homer in 12 games, a grand slam in the third inning of the first game of a doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan, lifted Mary Baldwin to a split against the Battling Bishops Saturday, winning the first game 10-2 in five innings. In the nightcap, NCWU rallied from a 4-0 deficit to gain a 10-5 victory and a split in the USA South twinbill.
Between games, the Fighting Squirrels and their fans honored the six members of the softball team that will be graduating in May.
The win lifted MBU (20-14, 6-8 USA South) into fifth place in the 10-team conference. The Fighting Squirrels reached the 20-win plateau for the third time in team history and the first time since joining the USA South in 2008. MBU's previous 20-win seasons were in 2004 (22-19) and 2006 (20-22).
In the first game, the Battling Bishops jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but MBU answered in the bottom of the first with six runs on six hits and three walks. Jenna Dimicelli's two-run double highlighted the outburst. May doubled the team's lead with a one-out grand slam in the third, her 11th round tripper of the season and 36th of her career. Pitcher Emily McCreary (7-4) went the distance, throwing a five-inning one-hitter and allowing two walks while fanning two.
In the nightcap, MBU scored four runs in the first two innings, with RBI singles by
McKenzie Tillman and
Trinity Thomas sparking the surge. In the top of the third, NCW scored four times on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. The Battling Bishops scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to pull away for the win. Tillman finished with three of MBU's 11 hits while Thomas and
Allie Hurt each reached base on two hits.
MBU plays its final home USA South twinbill Tuesday against Salem College (2 p.m.), followed by a doubleheader Saturday at Southern Virginia Saturday (1 p.m.).
