Starting pitchers Emily McCreary and
McKenzie Tillman threw complete-game shutouts, allowing Mary Baldwin to sweep a USA South softball doubleheader against Salem College Tuesday and tie the team record for most wins in a season.
MBU, in fifth place in the USA South with an 8-8 conference record, improved its overall record to 22-14, matching the record for total number of wins in a season set in 2004 (22-19 final record).
In the opener, McCreary threw a two-hitter over five innings and received eight runs of support by the offense, including seven runs in the fourth inning, to post an 8-0 five-inning victory. The senior hurler didn't surrender a walk and struck out two in posting her eighth win of the campaign.Â
Trinity Thomas and
Leanna Rankin each had two-run doubles in the fourth inning to lead the attack.
In the nightcap, Tillman scattered five hits and two walks while fanning five over seven innings in a 5-0 victory, posting her fourth win of the season. Rankin,
Emily Hall and
Hadley May each had RBI hits in the third inning to open the scoring. The hosts then added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to seal the win. Â
In her last career home game, Rankin, MBU's leadoff hitter for the past four years, finished with three hits, two walks, three runs and three RBI in the two games. Thomas also contributed two hits, two runs and two RBI.
MBU will shoot for the record-breaking win Saturday in a regular-season ending doubleheader at Southern Virginia (1 p.m.). The Fighting Squirrels will then advance to the USA South playoffs for the third-straight season, beginning Thursday, May 1, at a location still to be determined.
