Softball Team Unable To Hold 1-0 Early Leads and Drops Both Ends Of A DH At Southern Virginia

Mary Baldwin took early 1-0 leads in both ends of a softball doubleheader Saturday at Southern Virginia, but the Knights rallied late to win both games and qualify for the USA South Athletic Conference playoffs.  SVU won the opener 4-3 in nine innings and the second game by a 6-2 margin.

MBU (22-16, 8-10 USA South), which tied a team record Tuesday for most wins in a season, will be either the fifth or sixth seed in the playoffs which begin Thursday.  The Fighting Squirrels' playoff seed will depend on Sunday's Methodist at Brevard twinbill.  If Methodist wins both games, the Monarchs will be the fifth seed and MBU will be #6.  If Brevard wins either (or both) games, MBU will be the fifth seed.  Also based on the Methodist at Brevard DH, Southern Virginia will be either the sixth or seventh seed in the playoffs.

In Saturday's first game, Hannah Bolt gave MBU a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI single, but SVU evened the score in the bottom of the sixth.  Both teams scored once in the eighth inning and Mary Baldwin plated the go-ahead run again in the top of the ninth before the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.  Leanna Rankin and Hadley May joined Bolt with RBI hits in the first game for MBU.

In game two, McKenzie Tillman knocked in the first run of the game, again in the top of the third, for MBU's early lead.  SVU answered with four runs in the home fifth and two more in the sixth on the way to the sweep.  Trinity Thomas had two hits in each game while May had three walks in the second game to go along with her one hit in the first game.

Sites and pairings for the first round of the playoffs will be announced Sunday (4/27).
