Isiah Brooks cranked his second homer of the season, a grand slam in the fourth inning, to spark Mary Baldwin to a 6-3 baseball victory in the second game of Saturday's USA South doubleheader at Southern Virginia. The host Knights won the first game by a 13-2 margin.
The Flying Squirrels trailed SVU 1-0 in the fourth when
Grayson Moore,
Will Earnesty and
Conner Michael loaded the bases with consecutive singles, including infield hits by Moore and Michael. Brooks then pushed MBU into the lead with one swing, and the visitors adding two insurance runs in the seventh on a
Tyler Smith homer. Moore and
Michael Muller each had three hits for the winners.
Nolan Faulkenberry (win, 2-1) and
Lance Gowans (save, 1) were the recipients of the offensive support and timely defense. The two MBU hurlers surrendered nine hits and overcame three errors to strand 13 runners on base as the Fighting Squirrels recorded their first road win of the season.
In the opener, SVU scored four runs in the second and seven runs in the third to jump out to a lead MBU could not overcome.
Carter Attard,
Jacob Barber and Earnesty each had two of MBU's nine hits in the loss.
MBU returns to action with five road games this weekend, starting at Eastern Mennonite Wednesday (4/9, 4 p.m.), Hampton Sydney Thursday (4/10, 3:30 p.m.) and a three game USA South series at Pfeiffer Saturday (4/12, 3 p.m.) and Sunday (4/13, noon and 3 p.m.).
