Mackenzie Shores scored twice as Mary Baldwin defeated Hollins University 3-0 in women's soccer Wednesday at SMA Worth Field. Â
Shores, who leads the team with three goals in four matches, opened the scoring in the first half after a steal and breakaway, then doubled the Fighting Squirrels' lead in the 54th minute off an assist from sophomore
Alma Gonzalez-Hayes.
Freshman
Joelle Hare added the final goal in the 85th minute after several near misses, including a shot off the crossbar late in the first half.
Mary Baldwin controlled play with a 35-4 advantage in total shots and a 15-4 edge in shots on goal. Fresh off of being named USA South Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore goalkeeper
Amelia Cross made two saves to secure the shutout.
Prior to the match, the Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership (VWIL) hosted a remembrance ceremony honoring the 24th anniversary of 9/11, with local first responders being recognized, and a moment of silence observed.
The Fighting Squirrels (3-1) will try to extend their three-game winning streak Saturday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. when they host Eastern Mennonite University.
