Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Methodist Monarchs Edge Mary Baldwin in Overtime Thriller, 80–73

In an overtime thriller, the Methodist Monarchs squeaked past the Mary Baldwin men's basketball team, 80–73.

Sophomore point guard Marquis Dunklin dazzled in the first half, scoring 12 points while shooting an efficient 80 percent from the field. Four of his makes came from beyond the arc.

The Fighting Squirrels kept the ball moving, recording assists on more than half of their made baskets. Sophomore DJ Via led the way, dishing out four assists in the opening half.

Mary Baldwin's offense operated like a well-oiled machine, shooting 55 percent from the field as a team. Junior center Jamal Ukaegbu protected the paint, recording two of his three blocks before halftime.
The Fighting Squirrels carried an 11-point lead into the break, their second-largest lead of the game.

In the second half, MBU's shooting touch faded, while the Monarchs caught fire from deep. Methodist shot 75 percent from three-point range, compared to just 8.3 percent by MBU.

Mary Baldwin's foul trouble played a significant role, as leading scorer Rony Hogarth went to the bench early in the first half and logged only nine minutes in the second half. Hogarth fouled out with 1:30 remaining in regulation.

The Monarchs received a major offensive boost from Dontavious Pettaway and KJ Brooks, who scored nine points apiece. Methodist outscored Mary Baldwin 31–20 in the second half.
With five minutes remaining in regulation, Mary Baldwin held a narrow 62–60 lead. Brooks then powered through contact for a tough layup and converted the and-one to give Methodist the lead with one minute left.
Junior Malachi Washington answered by making one of two free throws to tie the game and force overtime.

In the extra period, the contest came down to free throws. The Monarchs converted 13 of their 14 attempts from the line, while Mary Baldwin struggled, making just five of nine.

The Fighting Squirrels will hit the road for their rescheduled December 29 matchup against Mary Washington on Monday, January 19, at 3:00 p.m.
