Mary Baldwin snapped back into the win column with a dominant 63–41 home victory over Salem College on Wednesday night.
The Fighting Squirrels were powered by an impressive backcourt performance from senior
DaVyne Johnson and freshman
Lanie Bethel, who combined for 41 points in the win.
Mary Baldwin trailed just once in the contest, briefly falling behind early in the first quarter before quickly seizing control. The momentum fully swung in the second quarter as Bethel caught fire, scoring six points while shooting perfect from beyond the arc, including a confident step-back three over a defender.
Johnson complemented Bethel's shooting with an aggressive attack to the basket, adding seven points in the quarter by finishing in the paint and converting at the free-throw line.
The Fighting Squirrels carried a commanding 31–13 lead into halftime, fueled by their defensive pressure. Mary Baldwin capitalized on Salem turnovers, scoring 18 points off turnovers in the first half.
The dominance continued after the break, as Mary Baldwin pushed its lead to as many as 29 points in the third quarter — the largest margin of the night.
The Fighting Squirrels will look to build on the momentum as they travel to Greensboro to take on Greensboro College on Thursday, January 20, with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
