The Mary Baldwin women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest to Greensboro College on Wednesday night, falling 69–63.
The Fighting Squirrels came out of the gates firing, knocking down four of their six three-pointers in the opening quarter. Senior
Davyne Johnson and freshman
Lanie Bethel provided the early spark, each connecting on two shots from beyond the arc to give Mary Baldwin a strong start.
Greensboro responded with a strong second quarter, edging ahead to take a one-point lead into halftime. The Pride controlled the paint, pulling down 12 offensive rebounds, but Mary Baldwin held firm defensively, allowing just five second-chance points. Kensly Stewart led all scorers at the break with 15 points.
The Pride took control in the third quarter as foul trouble plagued the Fighting Squirrels. Mary Baldwin's offense went cold, shooting 5-of-18 from the field and just 3-of-10 from the free-throw line. Greensboro capitalized on the slow start, carrying the momentum into the fourth quarter and extending its lead to 14.
Mary Baldwin refused to go quietly. The Fighting Squirrels scraped and clawed their way back into the game, igniting the crowd with a nine-point scoring run. Improved ball movement led to open looks, as freshman point guard
Malia Bullock orchestrated the offense, dishing out six assists while scoring a season-high 15 points.
Freshman
Taylor Urick added a boost from deep, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc to help pull Mary Baldwin within striking distance. Urick also set season highs with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Fighting Squirrels will look to bounce back on the road as they take on Brevard College on Saturday, January 31, at 2:00 p.m.
