The Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels women's basketball team came up short on the road Monday afternoon, falling to Brevard College, 86–48.
Mary Baldwin opened the game with strong energy, as the lead changed hands four times in the first quarter.
The Fighting Squirrels received balanced scoring early, with freshman
Lanie Bethel leading the way with six points, while senior
Davyne Johnson and freshman
Madison Newbauer each added five.
Mary Baldwin shot efficiently from beyond the arc, knocking down four of their eight three-point attempts in the opening quarter.
The offense cooled off in the second quarter, however, as the Fighting Squirrels were limited to eight points. Brevard capitalized on the scoring drought, outscoring Mary Baldwin 16–8 in the period to take a 35–26 lead into halftime.
Brevard found its rhythm in the second half, scoring 29 points in the third quarter and 22 in the fourth. Kenadi Gentry led the Tornadoes' offensive surge after the break.
Turnovers proved costly for Mary Baldwin, as Brevard converted 20 Fighting Squirrel turnovers into 22 points. The Tornadoes also controlled the paint, scoring 44 points inside.
Mary Baldwin will return to action on Saturday, February 14, when the Fighting Squirrels host the N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops at 2 p.m.
