Mary Baldwin softball was swept in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon by the University of Lynchburg. The Fighting Squirrels lost the first game 8-0 in five innings and fell 13-5 in six innings in Game two.
Game 1
The Fighting Squirrels struggled at the plate, recording just two hits in the opener.
The Hornets opened the scoring in the second inning when Zoe Elliott singled to right-center field, driving in two runs. Lynchburg's Sydney Bryant and Sarah Watts each added RBIs to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead.
Hailey Schildt led Lynchburg offensively with three RBIs, including a single in the fourth inning that extended the lead to 7-0.
Kate Charlton earned the win, pitching four scoreless innings for Lynchburg.
Game 2
Mary Baldwin found more success at the plate in the second game, highlighted by a big third inning.
Trailing 5-0, freshman Cassidy Branch drove in the team's first run with a single to right field that scored senior Breana Donnell. With runners in scoring position, freshman Dana Micone added an RBI to cut the deficit to three.
Freshman Skylar Meriwether and senior Santrice Rush followed with singles, bringing the Fighting Squirrels within one run.
Lynchburg responded with a five-run fourth inning to take a 10-4 lead.
In the sixth, Micone doubled to center field, driving in freshman Emma Morris for Mary Baldwin's final run.

The Fighting Squirrels travel to Fayetteville on Saturday, March 19, to face Methodist in a doubleheader to open conference play. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
