Mary Baldwin baseball split Saturday's doubleheader against Southern Virginia, finishing the three-game series 1-2. The Knights won the first game 20-9 in eight innings. In Game 2, the Fighting Squirrels responded with a 19-11 victory.
Game 1
Southern Virginia jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, but Mary Baldwin answered when freshman Patrick Sido hit a three-run home run.
Consistent hitting from the Knights helped Southern Virginia build a 10-3 lead by the sixth inning. With runners on first and second, senior Jacob Barber hit a three-run home run to center field. An RBI single in the sixth by senior Will Earnesty and two runs in the seventh accounted for the final scoring for the Fighting Squirrels.
Game 2
In Game 2, freshman Cooper Harris had a strong performance at the plate, recording two home runs.
Barber got the scoring started in the first inning with a three-run home run to left-center field. Southern Virginia responded in the top of the second inning when Robert Stempin hit a solo home run to center field.
Plate discipline and aggressive baserunning helped Mary Baldwin take a 9-1 lead. In the third inning, Harris hit his first home run of the game, driving the ball off the scoreboard to extend the lead to 12-3.
The Knights put together a strong stretch over the next three innings, trimming the deficit to 14-11 in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Harris hit his second three-run home run of the game. It marked his first collegiate game with multiple home runs.
