Mary Baldwin softball split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Wilson, falling 7-3 in Game 1 before playing to an 8-8 tie in Game 2, which was called after six innings due to darkness.
Game 1
The Fighting Squirrels recorded eight hits in the opener but were unable to keep pace with Wilson's offense.
Mary Baldwin tied the game in the second inning when senior
Cassidy Newcomb hit a solo home run to center field. Wilson responded with three runs in the second to take control and added insurance late.
The Fighting Squirrels made a push in the sixth inning, scoring two runs. Freshman
Skylar Meriwether drove in a run with a single up the middle, and freshman
 Lizzy Laurelli followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to one.
Wilson answered with a three-run sixth inning to pull away and secure the win.
Newcomb led Mary Baldwin with three hits, while freshmanÂ
Emma Morris added two hits in the loss.
Game 2
Mary Baldwin's offense broke out in the second game, totaling 15 hits in a back-and-forth contest.
The Fighting Squirrels struck early with two runs in the first inning and added four more in the third to build a 6-0 lead. Senior
Santrice Rush delivered a key two-run single in the inning, while freshmanÂ
Aliana Vanegas Hawkins and junior
Madison Dinnella each contributed RBIs.
Wilson answered with six runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
Mary Baldwin regained the lead in the fifth inning. Rush tripled to drive in a run, and junior
Sara Brooks followed with an RBI single to make it 8-6.
Wilson responded again, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning to even the score at 8-8.
The game was halted due to darkness in the seventh inning and reverted to a tie after six innings.
