The Mary Baldwin softball team split a conference doubleheader against Brevard on Friday, dropping the first game 11-4 before bouncing back to win the second game 6-0.
Game 1
In the opener, Mary Baldwin struck first as freshman
Dana Micone hit an RBI triple.
Brevard responded in the third inning, scoring five runs to take a 6-1 lead.
The Fighting Squirrels answered in the fifth when senior
Cassidy Newcomb doubled to right-center field, driving in senior
Santrice Rush from second base.
Rush added an RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to three.
However, Brevard pulled away with a four-run sixth inning. Elizabeth Auciello pitched a complete game for Brevard, recording nine flyouts.
Game 2
Mary Baldwin's pitching staff delivered a shutout in the second game, allowing just five hits.
The Fighting Squirrels scored two runs in the first inning on RBI doubles by Micone and freshman
Cassidy Branch.
Mary Baldwin extended its lead in the sixth inning as freshman
Skylar Meriweather, Rush and freshman
Emma Morris each drove in a run.
Sophomore
Bailey Jahna started in the circle for the Fighting Squirrels, holding Brevard scoreless through four innings while recording three flyouts and five groundouts. Sophomore
Ashlyn Smiley closed out the game without allowing a hit, striking out three and recording six flyouts.
