The Mary Baldwin softball team opened its season with a split on the road against Randolph, falling 8-1 in the first game before rebounding for a 6-3 victory in Game 2.
Game 1
The Fighting Squirrels were limited to four hits in the opener. Their lone run came in the third inning when freshman
Cassidy Branch singled through the left side to score senior
Santrice Rush from third.
Randolph pitcher Rylee Humble controlled the game in the circle, inducing 12 groundouts to keep the Mary Baldwin offense in check.
Game 2
Mary Baldwin jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap. Freshman
Aliana Vanegas Hawkins doubled down the right-field line to score freshman
Lizzy Laurelli and freshman
Dana Micone.
Randolph answered with one run in the second inning and two in the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Fighting Squirrels responded with a three-run fourth inning. With the bases loaded, freshman
Emma Morris reached on a fielder's choice to score freshman
Jada Bolden. Later in the inning, a walk to Branch forced in junior
Kendal Switala, and a wild pitch brought home Morris to give MBU a 5-3 advantage.
Mary Baldwin added an insurance run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to secure the win. The Fighting Squirrels did not strike out in Game 2.

Mary Baldwin will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic. The Fighting Squirrels open tournament play Friday against Piedmont at 11 a.m., followed by Tufts at 4 p.m.
