Box Score 2 Mary Baldwin traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the Triangle Collegiate Classic but was unable to secure a win Friday, falling 10-5 to Piedmont University and 11-2 to Tufts University.
Game 1
Piedmont got its offense going early, scoring five runs in the first three innings. Anslee Sauchegraw knocked in a two-run homer in the first inning.
Mary Baldwin's baserunners took advantage of Piedmont's infield troubles, putting senior
Cassidy Newcomb and freshman
Skylar Meriwether in scoring position. Senior
Santrice Rush drove them both in with a single to third base.
Later in the inning, freshman
Dana Micone drove in two more runs to tie the game.
The momentum was short-lived as the Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-5 lead. Piedmont sealed the victory with two more runs in the fifth inning.
Game 2
In Game 2, Tufts' pitching made the difference as Sarah Brody pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits while striking out four and forcing nine groundouts.
Mary Baldwin scored its two runs in the third inning when freshman
Cassidy Branch singled to left field, driving in freshman
Lizzy Laurelli.
Micone recorded her third RBI of the day with a single to center field that allowed freshman
Emma Morris to score.
