Mary Baldwin baseball split the first two games of a three-game weekend series against N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, taking game one 5-3 before falling 9-8 in game two.
Game 1
Mary Baldwin battled back after an early deficit to take the opener.
N.C. Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Fighting Squirrels responded in the third. Sophomore
Camden Bauswell delivered a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to one.
MBU took the lead in the fifth inning as senior
Isiah Brooks drove in two runs with a double to left-center, giving the Fighting Squirrels a 4-3 advantage. They added an insurance run in the eighth on an error to make it 5-3.
On the mound, junior
Lance Gowans delivered a complete-game performance, allowing just three hits and three runs while striking out seven to earn the win.
Game 2
The second game turned into a back-and-forth battle that ended in a late comeback by the Battling Bishops.
Mary Baldwin built an early lead, scoring one run in the second before adding two in the third and two more in the fourth. Bauswell's two-RBI single highlighted the fourth inning,
giving MBU a 5-2 lead.
After N.C. Wesleyan cut into the deficit, the Fighting Squirrels continued to add on. Freshman
Braden Williamson drove in a run in the fifth, and senior
Will Earnesty extended the lead to 8-3 with a two-RBI double in the seventh.
However, N.C. Wesleyan rallied in the ninth inning, scoring six runs to complete the comeback and secure a 9-8 win.
