Mary Baldwin men's soccer notched its first win of the season Saturday, defeating Averett University 6-1.
The Fighting Squirrels' offense struck early and often in the first half. Sophomore
Jayden Davis scored in the first minute and returned in the 12th minute to score his second goal of the game.
In the 24th minute, Mary Baldwin was awarded a penalty kick following a handball by the Cougars. Senior
David Romano took the penalty kick and delivered, driving the ball into the upper corner just out of the goalkeeper's reach.
Up 3-0, the Fighting Squirrels continued their attack in the second half. Junior
Connor Holland scored his first goal of the season in the 48th minute. Holland said the team played well but knows it still has a lot to work on.
"Felt good about the goal. I thought the chance we created was good, the cross was perfect and I just had to get in there," Holland said. "As a team, I think we can be calmer on the ball, but I think there's a lot of positives we can take from this."

Isaiah Morris scored the final two goals for Mary Baldwin in the 58th and 74th minutes, respectively, before Averett's Marek Hanscom ended the shutout with a goal in the 81st minute.
The Fighting Squirrels will play the fourth of their five-game homestand Wednesday, Sept. 16, against Regent University at 3:30 p.m.
