Mary Baldwin Falls to Brevard, 2-1, in Home Match

Mary Baldwin women's soccer opened a Fighting Squirrels soccer doubleheader at home Saturday, falling just short to Brevard College, 2-1.

The Tornadoes got on the board early as Mikayla Rubin scored to give Brevard a 1-0 lead.

Mary Baldwin struggled offensively in the first half, attempting just two shots. Brevard found opportunities to establish its offense, earning four corner kicks in the opening half.

The Fighting Squirrels came out of halftime more aggressively, attempting seven shots. However, it was the Tornadoes who struck first in the second half, as Brennan Howell found the back of the net to extend Brevard's lead to 2-0.

Mary Baldwin didn't quit. In the 86th minute, sophomore Joelle Hare put the Fighting Squirrels on the board. Hare's goal marked her third of the season.

Mary Baldwin will continue conference play at home Wednesday, Sept. 23, when it takes on William Peace. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
