Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, NC - The Mary Baldwin College volleyball team broke
an 83 match losing streak this afternoon when they defeated
Huntingdon College 3-2 (13-25, 18-25, 29-27, 28-26, 15-11).
After losing to LaGrange in the first match of the day 1-3, Mary
Baldwin fell behind 0-2 against Huntingdon College.
Down 14-20 in the third set, Mary Baldwin began to turn things
around starting with an ace by Xenna Belfield. An error by
Huntingdon brought the Fighting Squirrles to within 4.
Huntingdon then called a timeout and added two points to their
total. Mary Baldwin answered with 3 kills by Kennedy Quick, 2
kills by Katelyn Rice, and one by Jessica Hickman. The
fighting Squirrels also took advantage of some errors by the Hawks
and took a 24-22 lead. Huntingdon answered with a 3-0 run to
lead 25-24. The teams battled to a 27-27 tie. Farrah
Fullerton then gave the Fighting Squirrels two crucial back-to-back
kills and the win.
In the 4th set, Mary Baldwin found themselves with an early
18-10 lead. Huntingdon then battled back to tie the game at
24-24. After exchanging points, it was back-to-back kills by
Katelyn Rice and Kennedy Quick that gave Mary Baldwin a 28-26 win
and tied the match.
Execution was the key to Mary Baldwin's 5th set win. The
Fighting Squirrels tallied 9 kills with no attack errors and only 2
service errors. Five of those kills came from Katelyn Rice as
she scored 5 of the final 6 points determined to give Mary Baldwin
the win.
Katelyn Rice finished the long match with 21 kills which ties
her career record that she set October 26, 2013 against LaGrange
College. Kennedy Quick and Jessica Hickman also set new
personal records. Quick finished with 11 kills while Hickman
added 10.
Reilly Kelly tallied 32 assists in the match which is just one
shy of her record of 33 this season. Xenna Belfield led the
defense with 23 digs. She was followed by Katelyn Rice (13),
Jessica Hickman (12), and Reilly Kelly (10).
When asked about the win, Head Coach Paul Yee said, "They
believed they could do it and trusted their teammates and their
abilities in the tough moments."
Mary Baldwin College, 1-26 (1-15 USAS), play their final home
match this Thursday, October 30. They will celebrate Senior
Night when they host Ferrum at 7:00 PM.
