Fighting Squirrels Win Home Opener

STAUNTON, VA- The Fighting Squirrels improved to 3-1 on the season after a 87-50 win over the Bryn Mawr Owls on Saturday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd. Twelve different players contributed to their scoring efforts, with three players scoring in double-digits.

USA South Rookie of the Week, Leah Calhoun, led the Fighting Squirrels with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore Rachel Hepler contributed 16 points toward the win, shooting 54% (7-13) from the field and 25% (2-8) from the three point line. First-year Demet Saygili tallied 13 points, adding 6 rebounds and 3 assists to her performance. First-year Nicole Mallon had a team leading 13 rebounds.

"I was pleased with the number of players that made contributions on the floor last night. It was truly an overall team effort," said Head Coach Ross James after the home opener. "Everyone brought something to the table, whether it was a steal, an assist, a made basket or a rebound. The team has a tremendous amount of depth this season. We managed to put up 48 points in the second half alone. The Fighting Squirrel's spirit remained at an all-time high, despite what the scoreboard read. The encouraging and supportive culture of the team is promising for MBU."

The Fighting Squirrels will return to action at home on Monday, November 19th at to face off against Trinity (D.C.) at 6pm.
