Box Score The Mary Baldwin women's soccer team picked up its first win of the year on Tuesday, defeating Meredith 1-0 on the road.
The win marked the first in program history over the Avenging Angels (0-1, 0-1 USA South).
MBU (1-0, 1-0 USA South) gained an early lead as eight minutes into the game Sam Manfre's free-kick from just outside the center circle deflected off Shea Rider and fell directly to Annie Ammons for a shot that she put past a diving Meredith goalkeeper.
Meredith had some strong opportunities to equalize, including in the 16th minute when Lillian Fox whiffed on a perfectly placed centering pass from Morgan Thomas and was then blocked by an MBU defender on her second shot attempt.
Just 30 seconds later, Amile Gillies was left open in the box but was also unable to make contact with the ball, this time on a volley attempt.
In the 55th minute, Mary Archer Boyd hit the post in an attempt to bend one in.
Gillies found herself wide open on a breakaway but was denied a chance to equalize after Anyka Wilkin came off her line to make a big save in the 88th minute. Wilkin had six saves in the shutout win.
The Avenging Angels also found themselves losing many scoring chances on offside calls, as they had 10 against them in the game.
After the early goal, Mary Baldwin did not have much activity on the offensive end, although, a solid effort from Wilkins and the defensive line kept Meredith from getting on the board.
Due to expected inclement weather, MBU's originally scheduled next game at Pfeiffer on Friday has been postponed. A makeup date has yet to be decided on yet. The Fighting Squirrels will take the field again on Feb. 26 as they travel to Methodist for a 4:00 p.m. game.
