Baseball Earns Split With Greensboro

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mary Baldwin snapped a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win Game 2 of Saturday's conference doubleheader, 6-3, and earn a spit with Greensboro College. The Pride won the opener at John Moxie Stadium, 14-6.

The Pride scored in the top of third inning to take the lead in the second game, but the Squirrels evened the score in the bottom of the third when Colby Cheatham walked, stole second and scored on a double by Gavin Rush.

Mary Baldwin moved ahead with two runs in the top of fourth. Noah Kessler and Tucker Hensley led off the inning with singles and Kessler scored on a ground-rule double by Tyler Smith, good for a 2-1 MBU lead. After Dylan Rankin walked to load the sacks, Hensley scored on a long sacrifice fly by Cheatham, giving the Squirrels a 3-1 advantage.

Greensboro tied the score with two runs in the top of fifth and the score remained deadlocked at 3-3 until the bottom of the eighth. Rankin and Cheatham led off the eighth inning with back-to-back doubles to put the Squirrels ahead 4-3. Cheatham scored on a single by Jared Mayhew to push the margin to 5-3 and a two-out single by Kessler produced a run for a 6-3 Mary Baldwin advantage.

Freshman right-hander Alex Belako came out of the bullpen and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first career save to finish off the 6-3 victory.

Starting pitcher Ty Webster turned in a strong effort to pick up the win. Webster scattered 12 hits and allowed three runs in eight innings on the mound. Only one of the three runs was earned. Webster struck out three and walked three.

Michael Robertson, Kessler and Mayhew each finished the contest with two hits.

Mary Baldwin led 4-3 in the opener after four innings of play, but Greensboro scored 10 runs in the fifth to pull away for the victory.

Rankin led Mary Baldwin's 13-hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Rush, Kessler, Owen Marshall and Smith added two hits each.

The rubber game of the three-game set will be played Sunday afternoon at Moxie Stadium.
