Mary Baldwin coach Scott Hearn named to Bridgewater Hall of Fame

Mary Baldwin baseball head coach Scott Hearn will be inducted into the Bridgewater College Hall of Fame on Oct. 17.

The Delaware native arrived on campus in 1999 and, over the next four years, carved his name into the Bridgewater record books.

During his playing career, Hearn was a three-time All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference first-team selection, earning the honor in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. In his final two seasons, Hearn and the Eagles won back-to-back ODAC championships.

Hearn still remembers the feeling of winning his first ODAC championship 25 years ago.

"We made to the championship game my freshman year, lost to Virginia Wesleyan and I got a taste and realized wow we might be pretty good. There's no feeling like the bus ride home after winning a championship, because it just a culmination of everything that you've done that entire year all the blood sweat and tears that you put into it," said Hearn.

When his playing career ended, Hearn ranked first in program history in hits with 235, a record that stood until it was broken in 2023. Hearn still holds the program records for runs batted in with 165, total bases with 376 and doubles with 54.

Hearn's Bridgewater story wasn't over when his playing days ended. He traded his glove for a clipboard and spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach. Working under head coach Curt Kendall, Hearn helped the Eagles win two more ODAC championships.

In 2018, Hearn launched the baseball program at Mary Baldwin and has served as its head coach since the program's inception. But he wants his baseball legacy to extend beyond the diamond.

"Part of my recruitment talk is, if we just make their sons better baseball players, I'm really missing the boat on the opportunity I have here… I don't want to be remembered for just wins and losses. I want them to value their time when they leave here. I want them to know I got a good opportunity, I got a fair shot, I got a guy that cared about me. I got a guy that worked with me and helped me prepare for what's next"

Mary Baldwin Director of Athletics Tom Byrnes said Hearn's contributions to the university extend well beyond the baseball field.

"Scott's contributions to Mary Baldwin athletics over the last eight-plus years are significant and incredibly valuable," Byrnes said.

"He started a college baseball program from scratch with minimal assistance and built a competitive team in the USA South. He has served as a department mentor and administrator in terms of rules compliance and fundraising. Scott also spends significant time upgrading his team's game and practice facilities and contributes time in event management whenever asked.

"Scott has been a tremendous but underappreciated asset to Mary Baldwin athletics. As a department and university, we thank him and congratulate him for the Hall of Fame recognition for his undergraduate playing career at Bridgewater College."
