Box Score One big inning again doomed Mary Baldwin baseball as the Fighting Squirrels surrendered five runs in the sixth inning to host Ferrum in a 10-7 non-conference loss Tuesday.
The hosts took advantage of a misplayed ball that would have ended the inning with MBU trailing 7-3. Instead, the Panthers posted an extra three runs in the frame, which was the difference in the final score. MBU rallied with three runs in the eighth, one in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but was unable to get the equalizer against the Panthers.
Mary Baldwin outhit the hosts, 13-12, and hit the ball safely in seven of the nine innings.Â
Will Earnesty led the way with three hits, two RBI and a run scored.Â
Grayson Moore also drilled homer in his first game of the season in the third inning that gave MBU a 3-2 lead.Â
Josh Lallo,
Kelly Hackley and
Blake French each delivered two hits and produced a run.
MBU (4-10, 1-2 USA South) returns to action Thursday (3/21) with a non-conference game at Hampden-Sydney (3:30 p.m.), then travel to Cary, N.C. over the weekend for a three-game USA South series against William Peace.Â
The weekend games have been delayed a day due to the impending weather - the new schedule, to be played on Field 4 (turf) at the USA Baseball Complex, has the first game Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday's doubleheader starting at noon.
