Quintin Hart led a strong shooting performance by Mary Baldwin Tuesday, scoring a game-high 25 points and draining 7-for-9 from three-point range, as the Fighting Squirrels won their third game in the last five outings with a 77-65 decision at second-place Southern Virginia (18-6, 9-4 USA South).
With one game remaining, MBU and Brevard are tied for fourth place in the USA South standings, each with 7-6 conference records. The top six teams in the standings advance to the playoffs. The Fighting Squirrels (13-11) finish the regular-season Saturday at first-place Pfeiffer while Brevard travels to third-place N.C. Wesleyan. The playoff tournament schedule will be announced after all games are completed Saturday.
Hart and a strong team defensive effort helped the Fighting Squirrels break loose for a 44-22 halftime advantage. SVU came out hot in the second half and cut the lead to two points twice midway through the second half. Hart then ignited a 12-0 run with a pair of three-point shots to rebuilding MBU's lead to 68-52 with just under six minutes left and the visitors maintained the lead until the final buzzer.
Raymond Benton added 14 points, including several dunks, while
Jaden Ignacio chipped in 12 markers. Benton,
Logan Barbour and
Zach Sloan each had five rebounds. Sloan also dished out five assists.
