Murphy's First-Half Goal Lifts MBU To First-Ever Men's Soccer Win Vs. Wilson

Box Score Senior midfielder Brandon Murphy's first career goal midway through the first half turned out to be the only goal of the match and lifted Mary Baldwin men's soccer to a 1-0 non-conference victory at Wilson College (0-2) Sunday.

Murphy's goal, assisted by senior captain Edward Headley, found the the back of the net on the lower left side in the 26th minute to give the visiting Fighting Squirrels (1-1) the lead. Headley was credited with his sixth career assist.

Junior keeper Preston Bentley and the MBU defense protected the lead, with Bentley recording one save on three total shots (one shot on goal) for his second career shutout.

The Fighting Squirrels held a 13-3 lead in shots, and each team had four corner kicks.  It was MBU's first victory over the Phoenix in three tries over the past three years.

The victory was the first for Zach Clark, who is in his first year as MBU's head coach after several years as a collegiate assistant coach.

MBU returns to action Wednesday with a non-conference clash at Shenandoah (4 p.m.).
